English

At Grange Park Juniors, we believe that English is the foundation of the children’s curriculum throughout the school. Reading, Writing, Spelling and Grammar are core aspects across the curriculum which form the building blocks of children’s learning and knowledge acquisition. At Grange Park we believe the aim for our English curriculum is an accumulation of the following aspects which aim to create a positive reading and writing culture in our school, where both are promoted, enjoyed and considered a pleasure for all.

Firstly, we believe that it is paramount that the children have a rich reading curriculum which allows them to access a range of high-quality and challenging texts that relate to the wider curriculum and the society in which they live. The school is determined that every pupil will develop a love for reading during their time at Grange Park, underpinned by the skills of comprehension, reading fluency, retaining knowledge and information to allow for deep discussion and develop a rich vocabulary.

Secondly, given how writing encompasses the curriculum as a whole, we believe it imperative to allow children the opportunities to access a range of writing genres. By doing this the children will gain the knowledge and skills to write for a range of purposes and perform to a range of audiences. This writing will be supported by the teaching of grammar and spelling rules related to the children’s curriculum expectations, which in turn will ensure that writing is progressive throughout the key stages.

Ultimately, we aim to provide children the skills to become lifelong readers, writers and orators who have an understanding, love and appreciation for their rich and varied literary heritage.

Phonics & Reading

In Key Stage One, pupils complete their phonics screening test. By the time pupils join us in Key Stage 2, pupils will have mastered their phonics. However, some pupils may need extra support.

To support these pupils, we run regular, small group interventions using Read, Write Inc.

Once the children are able to decode, they learn to read fluency. With fluency and discussion comes comprehension alongside a love of reading which is fostered throughout our curriculum.

We strongly believe in creating a language-rich environment for our pupils. Our subject coordinators work closely with the English Coordinator to create a curriculum that is going to enhance the learning potential of your child through reading.
