Pupils with EAL
NTE Pupils
Children that arrive at the school with no or limited English (NTE) have a support programme that ensures they are able to partake in all aspects of school life as soon as possible. All NTE children will be assessed on arrival by Mrs Virdi to ascertain their starting point. From there a part-time programme of intervention is established with the children being supported either on a one to one basis or in a small group.
The support will encompass New to English sessions where everyday language is taught via speaking and listening, alongside phonics teaching, 1:1 reading sessions and early writing sessions.
NTE pupils will spend a larger proportion of the week in class to enable them to absorb the language around them. Where possible they will be partnered with a classmate that speaks the same home language. When in class all work with be differentiated to their language ability, this differentiated work is regularly reviewed as they acquire acquisition of the English language.
EAL Pupils
EAL children are supported in school by Mrs Virdi, the class teacher and support staff. Some EAL pupils will attend intervention sessions with Mrs Virdi to support them in developing their reading and writing skills, often with the emphasis on grammar. Where necessary, Mrs Virdi will also support pupils with the acquisition of mathematical vocabulary.
Mrs Virdi will also support EAL children in their class setting, again with an emphasis to further develop their reading comprehension or grammar skills.
Within class EAL children will have differentiated work, alongside support from the class teacher or the class TA. All classes have an EAL resource drawer in their Help desks where EAL children can find relevant resources to help them in class.
