Pupils with EAL
NTE Pupils
Children that arrive at the school and are new to English (NTE) have a support programme that ensures they are able to partake in all aspects of school life as soon as possible. All NTE children will be assessed on arrival by our EAL Support Officer to ascertain their starting point. From there, a part-time programme of intervention is established with the children being supported either on a one-on-one basis or in a small group.
The support will encompass New to English sessions where everyday language is taught via speaking and listening, alongside phonics teaching, 1:1 reading sessions and early writing sessions.
NTE pupils will spend a larger proportion of the week in class to enable them to absorb the language around them. Where possible, they will be partnered with a classmate that speaks the same home language. When in class, all work with be adapted to their language ability. This differentiated work is regularly reviewed as they acquire acquisition of the English language.
Pupils with EAL
Pupils with EAL (English as an additional language) are supported in school by all staff. Some pupils with EAL will attend intervention sessions with our EAL Support Officer to support them in developing their reading and writing skills, often with the emphasis on grammar. Where necessary, our EAL Support Officer will also support pupils with the acquisition of mathematical vocabulary.
Within class, pupils with EAL will have adapted work, alongside support from the class teacher or support staff.
We prioritise our pupils accessing a rich learning environment that allows them to access language in the classroom whilst developing their comprehension.
